Student Welfare
The AIHS’ educational philosophy places an emphasis on the individual.
The AIHS recognises the various challenges facing students as they commence their tertiary study. For many students, this means leaving their home environment and travelling from overseas or interstate to a new and unfamiliar city.
The AIHS aims to assist students with this transition by offering the following:
An Orientation Program which is conducted on the weekend prior to classes commencing. The program is designed to answer any questions students may have about the school in general, the program of study, their lecturers, and what they can expect during their course of study.
- For students wanting to know the ‘ins and outs’ of life in Canberra, senior student ambassadors are available throughout the Orientation Weekend. They will arrange a tour of the local area showing new students where to shop, where to eat and where to go to enjoy those precious leisurely hours.
- Pastoral care is provided for all students- identification of any personal needs or interests a student may have and guidance and support to a student as he or she settles into their new life at the AIHS.
The AIHS has an arrangement with an external professional counselling service which provides additional support to students in need. The agreement allows a student to arrange an appointment directly with our professional counsellors or, on a confidential basis, through the Principal.
- Academic Support is available through various means. As part of Orientation, a Study Skills program is conducted during the first semester.
- Students are also assigned an Academic Adviser who will provide guidance on subject selections and the order in which subjects should be taken, research skills and support with analytical or language requirements.
- Policies and Procedures have been developed to provide guidance to students and staff as to their academic and social obligations as a member of the AIHS community. Policies and Procedures are contained in the Academic Handbook..
- A Student Association Executive is elected by the Student Body. The SA meets on a regular basis with the Principal to bring forward suggestions, including proposals for student activities, and to raise any concerns which may arise throughout the Term.
