History & Hotel Kurrajong

AIHS was founded in 1995 in close affiliation with the prestigious Cornell University School of Hotel Administration. Since then, the school has developed a worldwide reputation for its academic excellence and unique learning environment.

Hands on training in a boutique hotel school

The Hotel Kurrajong, our ‘live learning laboratory’, has been a part of the school from its very beginning, giving us the unique advantage of being one of the few hospitality schools in the world – and the only school in the Southern Hemisphere – which operates its own boutique commercial hotel on-site. Under the close supervision of the hotel’s professional staff, students complete internships at the hotel, gaining invaluable hands-on experience in every aspect of hotel service and management.

Located only a short walk from Parliament House, Hotel Kurrajong is an iconic heritage boutique hotel whose origins go back to the birth of Canberra as the nation’s capital, and whose corridors are steeped in Canberra’s political history.

Designed in 1924 by the Commonwealth’s Chief Architect, John Smith Murdoch, who also designed Parliament House and the Hotel Canberra (now the Hyatt Hotel Canberra), the Hotel Kurrajong is a fine example of early Commonwealth architecture, influenced by the Prairie style of architects Frank Lloyd Wright and visionary planner of Canberra, Walter Burley Griffin.

To this day the Hotel Kurrajong remain an iconic hotel and one of Canberra’s best-known and most-loved establishments for both business and leisure travellers.

The Hotel Kurrajong offers 26 rooms, restaurant, terrace dining, bar and function rooms for all occasions. For more information on the Hotel Kurrajong please visit www.hotelkurrajong.com.au
